The truth about makeup ingredients

by Rokhsana Purdy

In a typical day we encounter many products - shampoo, soap, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, styling products, shower gels, body and face cream, makeup, hair spray, perfume and more.

The average woman absorbs over 14kg of ingredients from face and body products excluding cometics. These products are absorbed right into the bloodstream.

By the time you have made it to the door in the morning, you have swallowed, inhaled and absorbed through your skin hundreds of toxic chemicals. Some of these chemicals have been proven to be deadly to laboratory animals and many of them are known to be carcinogens.

We are literally poisoning our immune system with thousands of toxic chemicals that are known carcinogens, hormone disrupters and cancer-causing agents. How does this make sense? If it doesn't occur in nature, it shouldn't be inside you because you are a natural being.

We use beauty products to look better but unfortunately sometimes the short-term look isn't worth the long-term damage that such products can do to our skin.

Did you know that 95 percent of all products marketed for skin, hair, personal care or beauty contain chemicals linked to cancer or skin disorders?

The skin is the largest organ in the body and skin is pretty sensitive about absorbing chemicals. Applying creams and oils is NO DIFFERENT from eating them because they enter the blood stream regardless if they are ingested through the mouth or absorbed through the skin. If you want to experience how quickly your skin absorbs everything just rub garlic on the sole of your foot and wait 20 minutes to taste it in your mouth.

So why don't you rub something healthy into your skin and body instead?

Many people aren't aware that Health Canada and the FDA doesn't monitor the marketing or manufacturing of beauty products in any way.

They are free to put in as many toxic chemicals as they want. The only thing that stops them is reaction from the public. If enough people refuse to buy toxic products, manufacturers would stop making them.

"Not a single cosmetic company warns consumers of the presence of carcinogens in its products - despite the fact that several common cosmetic ingredients or their contaminants are carcinogenic themselves or are carcinogenic precursors." - From the book "The Safe Shoppers Bible" published in 1995 by Dr. Samuel Epstein, MD and Dr. David Steinman, MD

If you have decided you don't want to pay your hard earned money to a corporation that strives to deceive you and tell you lies, you will find that discovering how to replace your toxic products with products that promote good health is quite easy!

There are many other natural products on the shelves these days that are the same, if not better than the original chemical based ones. Start slow if you must. Throw out your chemical filled cosmetics as you gradually replace them with natural products.

All beauty products are not created equal, and some contain ingredients that only serve to accelerate the aging process or result in irreversible skin damage after repeated exposure. Short of moving to Europe where rules are more strict, the first step you can take to protect your health is READ THE LABELS of your beauty products and secondly through out or replace any that contain some of the following harmful chemicals.
